Medical Aid PMBs

Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) are a set of healthcare benefits that all medical schemes are legally required to cover, as defined by the Council for Medical Schemes.

In psychiatry, PMBs usually cover treatment for specific diagnoses and typically include either:

  • Up to 15 out-of-hospital consultations, or
  • Up to 21 days of in-hospital treatment

Your psychiatrist and psychologist share your out-of-hospital PMBs to treat your condition annually.

The patient remains responsible for checking and keeping track of their benefits throughout the year, due to the limited and shared nature of these benefits.

How the PMB Application Works

Once you have completed and signed the required form:

  • We complete the clinical section of the application
  • We submit the application to your medical aid on your behalf

Please note:

  • Physical applications cannot be submitted without your signed consent
  • Approval is not guaranteed, as each medical aid has its own rules and diagnoses they cover
  • A full list of PMB-covered diagnoses is available on your medical aid’s website
  • Our practice is authorised to apply on your behalf under our Terms & Conditions, unless you specify otherwise
  • You must inform us if this consent changes at any time
