About Dr Jerrie Bezuidenhout
Specialist Psychiatrist and Director of Medical Services at Vista Clinic, Centurion
Dr Jerrie Bezuidenhout is a specialist psychiatrist with more than 25 years of experience in adult mental healthcare. Based at Vista Clinic in Centurion, he provides psychiatric assessment and treatment for adults aged 18 to 65, combining evidence-based medicine with a practical, collaborative approach to long-term mental wellbeing.
Having trained and worked in both South Africa and the United Kingdom, Dr Jerrie brings extensive clinical, leadership, and educational experience to his practice. In addition to his private practice, he has served as Director of Medical Services at Vista Clinic since 2009, where he contributes to the clinical governance and strategic development of one of South Africa’s largest private psychiatric hospitals.
The Approach
Dr Jerrie does not work from a fixed template. Treatment is developed collaboratively with each patient. We recognise that no two individuals, circumstances, or recovery journeys are the same.
His approach combines medication, psychological interventions, and practical lifestyle changes that are practical for how a person actually lives. He takes a holistic view of mental health, considering physical health conditions, exercise, nutrition, sleep, relationships, and occupational functioning as integral components of treatment rather than afterthoughts. Where appropriate, he works closely with psychologists, dieticians, physicians, and other healthcare professionals as part of a patient’s broader care team.
Internationally recognised assessment and monitoring tools are incorporated throughout treatment to help patients better understand their symptoms, identify patterns, and measure progress over time. These include screening and monitoring tools for depression, anxiety, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, insomnia, burnout, and related conditions.
Dr Jerrie consults in both English and Afrikaans.
A Bio-Psycho-Social-Spiritual Approach
Dr Jerrie practises using a bio-psycho-social-spiritual model of mental healthcare, recognising that mental illness rarely affects only one aspect of a person’s life. Particularly in the management of chronic mental health conditions, he believes that long-term wellbeing requires a holistic approach that addresses the multiple factors influencing an individual’s health, functioning, and quality of life.
This approach considers four interconnected areas:
Biological (Physical)
Routines, Nutrition, Sleep, Exercise, Medication, Other Conditions
Psychological
Emotional Intelligence, Thinking patterns, Coping Strategies, Emotional Regulation, Emotional Burdens, Attitude
Social
Family relationships, Spouse/Partnership, Parenting, Work and Career impact, Friendships, Financial Stressors
Spirituality
Spiritual practices, Values/Meaning making, Belief System, Community Involvement, Source of Hope and Purpose
Clinical Leadership and Experience
Dr Jerrie completed his medical training in South Africa and subsequently specialised in psychiatry in the United Kingdom, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych).
Between 1996 and 2004, he worked across community, rural, and tertiary academic psychiatric services before returning to South Africa to establish his private practice at Vista Clinic in 2004.
Since 2009, he has served as Director of Medical Services at Vista Clinic, a 154-bed psychiatric hospital in Centurion. In this role, he is responsible for clinical governance, quality improvement, strategic planning, and professional leadership. His work includes developing clinical policies and systems, auditing clinical performance, implementing improvement initiatives, supporting multidisciplinary teams, recruiting and mentoring clinicians, and overseeing the clinical content of inpatient psychoeducational programmes.
This combination of clinical practice, leadership, and healthcare management provides a unique perspective on both individual patient care and broader mental healthcare systems.
Leadership, Performance and Executive Mental Health
Through his extensive leadership experience within healthcare organisations, Dr Jerrie developed a particular interest in leadership development, communication, organisational change, resilience, and performance under pressure.
For more than 15 years, he has worked with executives, business owners, healthcare professionals, and organisational leaders navigating workplace stress, burnout, leadership challenges, performance demands, and major career transitions.
His understanding of both clinical psychiatry and organisational leadership allows him to approach professional and executive mental health challenges from multiple perspectives.
Teaching, Research and Professional Education
Since 2010, Dr Jerrie has served as an honorary lecturer within the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Medicine through Vista Academy’s tertiary training partnerships. He has contributed to the education and training of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
He has presented at national and international psychiatric conferences, including conferences in Los Angeles and Geneva, and has contributed to publications and public discussions on psychiatric practice and mental health.
Mental Health Advocacy and Destigmatisation
Throughout his career, Dr Jerrie has been committed to reducing the stigma associated with mental illness through public education, advocacy, and community engagement.
As part of the development team of the Crazy for Walking Campaign, he has been involved in multiple public engagements to raise awareness. In 2017, as part of the Crazy for Walking campaign, he undertook a walk from Pretoria to Cape Town with colleagues to raise awareness about mental health and encourage open conversations around psychological wellbeing. The campaign has since expanded internationally.
He believes that reducing stigma enables more people to seek help, strengthens community support, and improves quality of life for individuals living with mental illness. His goal has always been to help create communities that respond to mental health challenges with understanding rather than judgment.
As a public advocate for mental health, Dr Jerrie has appeared on numerous television, radio, and media platforms, including Talk702, Jacaranda FM, Hot FM, Radio Pulpit, Groot FM, Pretoria FM, SABC Newsroom, and Maroela Media. In 2018, he co-hosted the educational video series Tot die Punt, covering topics including depression, suicide, relationships, and mental health.
